If you don't have East-Asian language support on your computer, Windows users can find their computers' set-up disk and click here to learn how install it.
Mac users should already have Asian Language support built in to their computer.
There are 125 Katakana characters, I'll do the math for you and say the extra 42 are non-Japanese sounds that the Japanese use for loan words outside they're regular sound system.
I said it once, I'll say it again:
All the rules that apply to Hiragana apply to Katakana as well.
Katakana list: Basic

Katakana List: Non-Japanese sounds for Non-Japanese words

Katakana rules: Double vowels and consonants
The rule for double consonants remain the same as in Hiragana.
Double vowels are represented by dashes instead of second characters of the same letter.
Sample words in Katakana spelling:
パーティー
ラブ
クラシック
スカート
スター
Read these until you don't have to think about what the characters stand for. See if you can make out the meanings of these words in English.
